My Tribute to Lester William Polsfuss aka Les Paul who died on August 13th 2009. As I do not own a Les Paul, it was a real observation work. I used every reference images I could find. The flames from candles have been added within Photoshop

It was initially supposed to be following my illustration "Dream Avenue", where you can see the sign "heart street". But along the way I have found new ideas that eventually led here! The render with Vray took about 6 hours (2000px*1600px) on my old computer...And also a few minutes for the hair (grass) render.

At first it was just a small research of textures and colors. Techniques: for the 3d part I didn't use any cg lights. It is just an ambient occlusion render. The colors and textures (and so the mood) have been made within Photoshop.

That was an easy job. I started to create some materials with procedural textures, then I added a plane to my scene, a dome with a texture (Vraylight Material) to simulate the skylight, etc… The image has been completed in a few hours (render not include).

It was made for a cg contest on the french website 3DVF.
The subject was about Jules Verne universe. During this period, I had a lot of work to do and I started my project only 2 days before the contest end. Unfortunately I did not win, but I was really pleased with the result insofar as I had just a short weekend to create this image.

There are many good tutorials on the net, so I just picked up a few to learn different techniques.
After modeling the head and chest, I decided to make it more attractive. I thougt about a few ideas and after several weeks I built what I had on mind.

At first it was just an exercice to "play" with the bridge tool from 3dsmax. The most difficult part was to create that kind of atmosphere. I used more than 10 differents lights just for the mood. I added glow and effects within photoshop.

My name is John, I was born in Belgium on December 20th 1983. After secondary school, I studied interior design. Although it was very interesting, it wasn't really what I wanted to do. The next year I looked for for something new and I discovered CG art. I've never been a very good student but I've always enjoyed manual work. So I decided to do it my way... I have only three years of experience with CG, four years with computer music and the large part of my learning has been done independently. So I have to thank all the artists around me and on the net for their tutorials, advices, and of course their beautifull works...
